Franc Corbí Discusses the Key Challenges Facing Education Today on RDS Television

The situation of education in Spain, PISA results, the need to transform educational models, screens, technology and the impact of artificial intelligence were among the topics discussed by Franc Corbí, Director General of British School Alzira, Xàtiva & Gandia, during a recent interview on RDS Television.

During the conversation, Franc shared his perspective on some of the changes and challenges currently shaping education and directly affecting schools, teachers, families and students.

A Look at the Challenges Facing Education in Spain

One of the first topics discussed was the situation of education in Spain and the concerns that, in Franc Corbí's view, are raised by educational outcomes and their development.

During the interview, he argued for the importance of making education a national priority and highlighted the value of reaching a national agreement on education that could provide a stable framework for addressing the changes needed within the system.

In this context, he referred to the OECD's PISA reports and the need to reflect on what changes could help improve educational outcomes and, above all, ensure that education responds to the needs of younger generations.

For Franc, one of the major challenges is moving towards more competency-based educational models, supported by the resources, teacher training and tools required to make this transformation possible in the classroom.

From Traditional Models to More Competency-Based Education

During the interview, Franc Corbí also reflected on the evolution of educational models.

In his view, a system based primarily on textbooks and exercise books is no longer sufficient on its own to respond to the environment in which children and young people are growing up. Students are surrounded by information, stimuli and digital tools that have transformed the way they interact with knowledge.

For this reason, he believes education needs to continue evolving towards approaches that develop not only knowledge, but also competencies, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and abilities that can be transferred to real-life contexts.

This transformation, he explained, also requires teachers who are prepared to adapt their methodologies, together with the resources needed to make meaningful change possible.

Education and Technology: Beyond Screens

Another central topic of the conversation was the debate around screens and technology in education.

Franc Corbí highlighted the importance of distinguishing between screen use and the educational use of technology. In his view, screens should not become the focus of education, particularly during the early years, but this does not mean overlooking the opportunities technology can provide as a learning tool.

In this context, he highlighted areas such as robotics, coding and other technological skills, which he considers increasingly relevant when preparing students for a professional environment that is already undergoing significant transformation.

The question, therefore, is not simply whether there should be “more screens” or “fewer screens”, but rather why, how and when technology is used in education.

Artificial Intelligence Is Also Changing Education

The conversation also addressed one of the most important educational topics of the moment: artificial intelligence.

Franc Corbí explained that the arrival of these tools requires us to reconsider some traditional approaches to classroom learning. If artificial intelligence can immediately complete certain tasks, such as producing a summary or a text analysis, the educational challenge may be to move away from activities whose main purpose is simply to produce that result.

From this perspective, the key lies in changing the way we teach and using technology to create new learning experiences.

During the interview, Franc also shared a personal example to illustrate this idea: how artificial intelligence can turn an interest in video games into an opportunity to explore other areas of learning, such as carrying out scientific experiments at home.

For him, the question is not simply whether AI is good or bad for education, but how it is used and what kind of learning we build around it.

Preparing Students for the World They Will Enter

One of the ideas running throughout the conversation is the importance of keeping education connected to the world in which students will build their adult lives.

Society and the workplace are changing rapidly, driven in part by technology and artificial intelligence. In response, education has the challenge of providing students with knowledge while also equipping them with the tools to adapt, learn independently, solve problems and operate confidently in environments that are still evolving.

This perspective connects closely with one of the principles underpinning the educational approach at British School: preparing our students not only for the academic challenges of today, but also for the challenges of a constantly changing future.

Education, Debate and Reflection

The interview on RDS Television forms part of Franc Corbí's wider involvement in conversations around education and families.

Franc is also presenter and content director of Escuela de Padres, RDS Television's educational programme addressing current issues for families and education professionals. The programme's seventh season continues to focus on some of the key educational challenges facing society today.

At British School Alzira, Xàtiva & Gandia, we particularly value these opportunities for dialogue because talking about education also means talking about the future of our children and young people.

Educational transformation does not depend on a single methodology, tool or technology. It requires reflection, professional development, dialogue and the ability to adapt to a society that is constantly changing.
