amiGO! Language Support Programme: Learning Spanish and Feeling Part of the Community

Moving to a new country is an experience full of opportunities, but it can also bring new challenges. For children and young people, being able to communicate with the people around them is one of the first steps towards feeling safe, making friends and fully enjoying their new school experience.

That is why, at British School Alzira, Xàtiva & Gandia, we have created amiGO!, a language support programme for students whose first language is not Spanish.

The aim of amiGO! goes beyond learning vocabulary or grammar. We want our students to communicate with confidence, take an active part in school life, build relationships with their classmates and feel part of their new environment from the very beginning.

All of this is provided through personalised support and at no additional cost to families.

A space designed around each student

Learning a new language takes time, guidance and an environment where every student can progress at their own pace.

Through amiGO!, international students have access to a dedicated Spanish language classroom, where they work in small groups with teachers specialising in teaching Spanish as a second language.

This approach allows learning to be adapted to each student’s language needs while providing continuous monitoring of their progress.

The programme is built around three key areas:

01. Integrated into the school day

amiGO! sessions take place within the school timetable.

While their classmates attend the subjects included in the Spanish curriculum, students who require language support work in their dedicated classroom, without the need for additional lessons at the end of the school day.

In this way, learning Spanish becomes part of their everyday educational experience and a practical tool to support their gradual participation in school life.

02. Specialist and personalised support

Every student starts from a different point.

For this reason, the programme works in small groups with teachers specialising in Spanish as a second language, allowing content to be adapted to each student’s current level and needs.

The educational team continuously monitors each student’s progress, supporting their development and helping them gradually gain greater independence and confidence when using Spanish.

03. Supporting integration and academic progress

Learning Spanish is about much more than being able to communicate in a new language.

It also means understanding the environment around them, taking part in conversations, interacting with other students, asking for help when needed and gradually feeling more comfortable in everyday life.

That is why amiGO! is fully integrated into the educational project of our Schools. It is not an additional activity, but a form of support that facilitates the integration of international students and encourages their active participation in the school experience.

Much more than learning a language

For Aida Jiménez, Programme Coordinator, the purpose of amiGO! goes beyond language learning:

“Learning Spanish is not just about studying grammar; it is about opening the door to new friends, new laughter and feeling truly at home. At amiGO!, we are ready to accompany your children on this journey, making sure they take every step with a smile and confidence.”

This philosophy sums up the purpose of the programme: supporting students throughout their adaptation so that language stops being a barrier and becomes a way to connect with others.

At an international school community such as British School Alzira, Xàtiva & Gandia, where families and students from different countries and cultures come together, supporting this integration is also part of the way we understand education.

A 100% free programme for our families

One of the most important features of amiGO! is that the programme does not involve any additional cost for families.

It was created specifically to support our international families as they adapt to life in Spain and, because it is integrated into the School’s own educational project, the service is provided completely free of charge.

We want families to be able to access this support without having to worry about arranging external lessons, additional travel or extra costs.

The School takes care of the process so that families can focus on what matters most: supporting their children as they make progress, gain confidence and enjoy their new experience.

How can students access the amiGO! programme?

Families do not need to arrange an external enrolment process in advance.

The Psychopedagogical Team and specialist teachers monitor each student’s progress and, when they identify a need for language support, the School contacts the family directly.

The student is then offered a place in the group and level that best matches their current language needs.

This makes the process simple and personalised from the very beginning.

Always supporting our international families

Starting a new chapter in another country means adapting to a new environment, new routines and, in many cases, a new language.

At British School Alzira, Xàtiva & Gandia, we want our students to experience this process with the support and confidence they need to build their own path.

Because learning Spanish is about much more than learning a language.

It means being able to talk to a classmate, understand a conversation, make new friends, participate in class, ask for help, express how they feel and gradually feel more at home.

Through amiGO!, we continue to strengthen our commitment to personalised, caring and international education, giving every student the tools they need to integrate, learn and grow.

Because when students feel included, safe and supported, they are also better placed to learn and fully enjoy their school experience.
