Year 10 students attend the theatre to watch a performance of the play “El lazarillo de Tormes”

This week, Year 10 students attended a play of “El Lazarillo de Tormes” in Valencia.

“El Lazarillo de Tormes” marks the beginning of a new literary genre: the picaresque novel, which holds great significance in Spanish Golden Age literature.

Written in an epistolary style, autobiographically, and in the first person, the story portrays the harsh life of a young boy named Lázaro as he faces numerous challenges from childhood to adulthood. At the same time, the book serves as both a portrait and a critique of 16th-century Spanish society.

For our students, attending this theatre performance provided valuable insight into the play and its literary importance, as “El Lazarillo de Tormes” is a key part of the Year 10 curriculum.
