Year 9 pupils investigate changes of state of matter

Year 9 students have been studying the changes of state of matter in Science and, as we are convinced of the importance of “Learning by doing”, they have been able to go deeper into the subject by doing experiments in the laboratory.

The investigation consisted of three parts: the design and planning of the practical, the carrying out of the practical in the laboratory and the writing of the final report with the conclusions of the investigation.

To do this, the students had to use frozen water with different salt concentrations and change the temperature conditions to change from one state to another (solid, liquid and gaseous) by means of different procedures (solidification, vaporisation, sublimation).

Learning for themselves while experimenting with everyday materials will undoubtedly help them to remember and internalise the contents of the subject, and what’s more… they love using the laboratory and its instruments!
