World Nursery Rhyme Week 2022

World Nursery Rhyme Week is an annual initiative which this year took place the week of 14-18 November, and promotes the importance of nursery rhymes/songs in early childhood development and education.

Launched in 2013, it is an initiative in which since its launch, almost 5 million children from over 100 countries have participated.

Nursery rhymes for the under 7s play an important role in early childhood development and education. As well as being fun, they are excellent teaching tools. They enhance vocabulary and language development. They help children develop their reading and writing skills. They provide a fun way to support early number skills. Nursery rhymes help children develop their social, physical and emotional skills.

We should never underestimate the power of a simple nursery rhyme/song in language and literacy development.

Each year, 5 rhymes are chosen and children are encouraged to participate in the ‘Rhyme a Day’ challenge by singing the nursery rhymes and participating in supporting activities.

The 5 official rhymes for 2022 have been:

The Big Ship Sails

1,2,3,4,5

Five Little Speckled Frogs

BINGO

Twinkle Twinkle
