Exploring the world through the senses: Sensory activities in EYFS

In Early Years, learning is closely linked to exploration, curiosity and play. That’s why in our classrooms we carry out a wide range of sensory activities designed to stimulate the five senses of our pupils, supporting their holistic development from the earliest stages.

These activities include experiences with different textures, sounds, scents, lights and natural materials, inviting children to explore, handle and discover the world around them through all their senses. Each proposal is carefully planned to enrich their sensory development.

Sensory play not only enhances cognitive and motor skills, but also boosts creativity, concentration and language, by offering opportunities to describe sensations and emotions. What’s more, these experiences have a positive impact on emotional wellbeing, as many of them help children self-regulate and relax.

At British School Alzira, Xàtiva & Gandia, we firmly believe in the value of sensory exploration as a key part of active, meaningful learning adapted to the needs of young children. We will continue to provide rich, stimulating environments that support their growth in a safe, respectful and discovery-filled setting.
